Veterinary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, disorder, and injury in animals. Along with this, it also deals with animal rearing, husbandry, breeding, research on nutrition and product development. The scope of veterinary medicine is wide, covering all animal species, both domesticated and wild , with a wide range of conditions which can affect different species. Veterinary medicine is widely practiced, both with and without professional supervision. Professional care is most often led by a veterinary physician also known as a vet, veterinary surgeon or veterinarian , but also by paraveterinary workers such as veterinary nurses or technicians. This can be augmented by other paraprofessionals with specific specialisms such as animal physiotherapy or dentistry , and species relevant roles such as farriers.

Mr B owns Cooper -a black Labrador with a penchant for indigestible inanimate objects. Unfortunately for Cooper, who introduced himself to me by projectile vomiting all over my shoes, Barbie and friends had taken up a problematic residence in his small intestine, which meant he was going to need emergency abdominal surgery. U nfortunately for Mr B, who only ever sees my male boss, Cooper chose a Saturday afternoon for this latest escapade which meant it was me – the twenty-five year old woman- or nothing.

Some clients are more vocal about this than others. It was too much for a girl. Girls should be dainty and ideally be in the kitchen. B ut I know the way to beat this type of thinking is not with violence. The only way to beat it is to prove him wrong and show him what a fantastic veterinary surgeon this ‘little girl’ with two honours degrees can be.

Veterinary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, control, diagnosis, is the first extant record of veterinary medicine. The Shalihotra Samhita, dating from the time of Ashoka, is an early Indian veterinary treatise.

This was an intellectual movement, mainly in France, Britain and Germany, which advocated freedom, democracy and reason as the primary values of society so that reason and science came to replace religion and magic as the basis for understanding the natural world. Politically, it was a time of revolutions, turmoil and the overturning of established traditions.

There was a new regard for animals, anticipating the rise of Darwinism, and a scientific approach to their diseases that was a part of the rise of comparative medicine. Initially the veterinary profession in Europe was centred on the horse, influenced by the needs of the Army. The horse remained the focus for many years but, over time, the interests of the profession spread to cattle and other livestock, then to dogs and now to companion and exotic animals.

Settled agriculture made it possible for humans to stay in the same place for a longer period of time without depending on hunting, leading to the creation of more extensive urban development. However, the recent discovery of dam-work and irrigation systems in southern China dating from the same period, and of equal skill and complexity, obviously throws new beams of light on the origins of civilisation and, perhaps, the origins of the veterinary profession.

Model livers have been found at various early Mesopotamian sites and, given the importance of animal dissections for soothsaying plus the value of animals as goods and chattels, it is likely that animal doctors existed from these early days of agriculture and that both medical and veterinary anatomy were well advanced.

Today, veterinarians frequently study the names and properties of herbs, yet they may have little or no personal experience of the nature of the plant, its environment, its taste, and its properties. Herbalists like Shen Nong Dioscorides and many others learned from their direct experience; this is invaluable even today. Observing herbs and tasting them directly or by infusion, decoction, pills, or formulas is of great benefit, as is taking the herbs for a course of therapy to experience the effects.

Herbalists who follow this path will know at a deep experiential level what it is they are prescribing.

Unlike human medicine, veterinary medicine does not require additional training after the traditional four years of veterinary school. In other words, the majority of veterinarians graduate from veterinary school and go straight into general practice. A smaller percentage of veterinary graduates elect to further their training with a rigorous 1-year internship, if selected; an additional smaller percentage go on to complete a 3-year residency.

An emergency critical care residency focuses on working in the emergency room and intensive care unit. This is equivalent to a human residency in emergency medicine or a residency as an intensivist. Veterinary ECC residencies focus on triage, stabilization, life-saving procedures, and learning the most up-to-date techniques for diagnosing and treating the critically ill or emergent patient. Residencies are accredited through the American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care ACVECC and undergo rigorous regulation to ensure that residents are supervised and trained by mentors who have been trained through similar programs.

Upon successful completion of these two large tasks, the veterinary resident becomes a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care ACVECC and is board-certified as a veterinary specialist in emergency and critical care.
